Deploying the National Guard to guard federal facilities may suppress protests and civil-society activities, disproportionately affecting immigrant communities, people exercising their First Amendment rights, and marginalized populations who rely on community support networks. Use of military force in civilian settings can deter individuals from seeking care or legal support (including immigrants fearing enforcement) and elevate stress or trauma among impacted communities, undermining health equity and trust in institutions. Additionally, the chilling effect and fear may prevent many from obtaining basic necessities such as food and healthcare and prevent them from meeting social determinants of health needs such as going to work/school or maintaining relationships, further eroding community health.
